Summer Reading Program
Union Academy is happy to announce our Summer Reading Program.
Sixth grade students are reading The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis this summer. The Breadwinner is the story of Parvana, an 11-year old girl who lives in Kabul with her parents and three siblings. The Taliban arrests Parvana’s father. Parvana must struggle to help feed her family and survive the fundamentalist society under the Taliban’s rule.
Seventh grade students are reading The Dollar Kids by Jennifer Richard Jacobson. When a family buys a house in a struggling town for just one dollar, they’re hoping to start over — but have they traded one set of problems for another? Twelve-year-old Lowen Grover, a budding comic-book artist, is still reeling from the shooting death of his friend Abe when he stumbles across an article about a former mill town giving away homes for just one dollar. But is the program too good to be true?
Eighth grade students will be enjoying Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still. By her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books.
Summer reading is crucial if students want to maintain their reading skills throughout the long summer break. Therefore, we would like to encourage pleasure reading for the summer as well as the completion of a required book for summer reading.
Each grade level has its own required books. Click the links below to open the details of your student’s summer reading. Each grade has an assigned book, a Learner Profile Activity requirement, and two additional books selected by the students.
